The City of Kawartha Lakes is pleased to announce the completion of a draft active transportation network that spans the entire municipality, along with supporting recommendations that will help support the effective implementation of the network and encourage its use. These are now being refined into the development of a final Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) document. See below for how you can help us prioritize and refine the ATMP in the coming months.
What is Active Transportation?
Active Transportation typically refers to human-powered, non-vehicular modes of travel that includes walking, cycling (including cargo bikes, hand pedal bikes) rollerblading / roller-skating and scooters. Accessibility is a key consideration of our project, so we will also be evaluating how to better accommodate users of mobility aid devices and electric bicycles.
You may already be aware of our Trails Master Plan Update…so, how will the ATMP be different?
The ATMP is a new plan and initiative for Kawartha Lakes that will consider how the city can improve active and accessible transportation experiences that accommodate safe and comfortable day-to-day trips for people of all and abilities, as well as longer distance cycling trips for touring purposes.
Both plans will deal with recreational (for fun, fitness, and socialization) and day-to-day trip types (to school, work, shopping etc.) for active users. The difference is in “where” the facilities and routes are or will be located. The Trails Plan Update will only address off-road connections while the ATMP will only address on-road or in- boulevard connections. Network connectivity (i.e., how the routes link together) will be achieved through the coordination of routing through the planning and phasing / implementation processes.
The project is scheduled to be completed by Fall 2023.
